Papier Glacé Exhibition : a century of fashion photography at the Palais Galliera…

The power of an image resides in the way that it bears the mark of its time, a feature that is highlighted by the papier glacé exhibition at the palais galliera, retracing history with 150 images from the condé nast archives, portraying a century of fashion photography.papier glacé exhibition : until 25th may 2014 - palais galliera, 10 avenue pierre 1er de serbie-75016 paris interviews:sylvie lécailler:we have 100 years of photography but organized in a thematic way. i wanted to involve contemporary photographers and older photographers. i wanted to include them in this photographic story. it is more than an exhibition but one that examines the genres of fashion photography, whether outdoors or still life, or even all the work focusing on the body. this allowed me to assemble all these very different eras of photography.this kind of photography was created because it is publically supported which is important when defining it. and i believe that in any case that fashion photography is a kind of photography that is currently growing commercially because it seeks to sell clothes and art, which means working in a completely artistic and aesthetic dimension.it has to make a visual impact but it also has to highlight its subject, it own way of showing it all, to represent women and society. and i think it has an interrogative role, sometimes even being a head of its time. there are those first photographs taken by guy bourdin, with the woman who wears a very large wide-brimmed hat who poses in les halles in paris in front of those dear heads whose tongues are hanging out which was quite a shocking image when it was published in 1955. the images of deborah turbeville where you see these rather languid girls in the public baths that were published in 1975 in american vogue and that caused the drop in vogue readership in the united states. the real question isn’t about knowing whether fashion photographers are artists or not. i think it is all a false debate. i think that the power of an image and the way in which it marks its era and creates a distorted insight into a given moment. that is what is interesting and that is why these fine images deserve to be displayed in a museum.music free of right : bandit & nikit-2012
