How does a perfume become legendary? through the no5 culture chanel exhibition, the house with two c’s leads us through the inspiration and artistic events of its founder, gabrielle chanel and nicely correlates it with the birth of perfume no5. in the room with tinges of black and white of course, jean-luc froment, curator of the exhibition, unveils through unpublished documents placed in very graphic plexiglas cubes, multiple meetings that gave rhythm and marked the life of miss chanel, like picasso to stravinsky and even dali, but also works of art, architectural lines that inspired, just like the absence of loved ones, boy capel, who died in a car accident. a perfume is born and so evolves through a story, that of coco chanel and of her close relationship with art. a second part of the exhibition allows one to enjoy the workshops or to re-discover the film commercials for the perfume made by the biggest names and featuring actresses such as catherine deneuve, carole bouquet and nicole kidman. it’s the first time that the perfume and notably chanel no5 has been chosen as an underlying theme for the culture chanel exhibition. indeed, the culture chanel event gives rise to exhibitions relating to the birth and history of this illustrious house, held in all cities of the world. no5 culture chanel exhibition– from the 5th may to 5th june 2013, palais de tokyo, paris. music free of right / bandit & nikit - 2012 interview jean-louis froment : the no. 5 perfume is the most magical symbol of the house of chanel, a journey of more than 50 years which still manages to move us, to make us think of the idea of modernity. about the bottle, this really is the artistic participation around chanel which makes up the bottle: minimalism, post-cubism, dadaist label, and all these elements, all these artistic paths are addressed in the exhibition. she knew in advance that it would be no. 5 because it’s this number which in any case defines the spirit for her. a drop of no. 5 is much more than a drop of perfume, it’s a story, the story of a woman, the story of women, a love story, unhappiness, it’s a page of cocteau, three lines of reverdy, a score of stravinsky, a painting by picasso, it’s all this and the exhibition deploys this adventure. malraux said that the twentieth century is defined by picasso, chanel and de gaulle so it’s therefore important to situate it like that.
