TheMicam: the decline continues

Published
Sep 7, 2015

The footwear show TheMicam, held in Milan from 1st to 4th September, unsurprisingly recorded a negative result, its attendance once more declining. This, the show's 80th edition, dedicated to the Spring-Summer 2016 collections, attracted 30,801 visitors, as opposed to 32,112 last February and 34,176 a year earlier.  The economic crisis, volatile exchange rates, European sanctions... The Italian show continues to suffer the lasting consequences of a complicated situation.

Out of 30,801 visitors who registered for the latest summer session, 16,480 came from outside Italy. In their closing press release, the organisers noted how "visitors from Asia, the Middle East, the US and Europe were stable in numbers, except for France (chiefly a result of the sustained attendance at the shows in Paris on virtually the same dates), while there was a marked decline in the attendance of Russian, Japanese and especially Italian buyers, taking into account a domestic market in dire straits."

Nearly 1,443 exhibitors, 602 coming from outside Italy, took part in the event which extended over an area of 64,175 m² in the Rho Fiera exhibition district. A year earlier there were 1,557 exhibitors.

"Even if the show suffered because of the international crisis, it remains a global benchmark event, thanks to those entrepreneurs who continue to invest heroically in creativity and innovation despite a hostile business context," stated Anna Rita Pilotti, the new chairman of Assocalzaturifici, the Italian footwear manufacturers association. She pointed out the lack of governmental support for the industry in Italy and the crippling European sanctions against Russia.

Anna Rita Pilotti also announced the show's "projected overhaul" for next year. Starting from a change in dates to include Sunday again, as well as a shift from the end of August to September for the summer edition. In 2016, TheMicam will thus be held from Sunday 14th to Wednesday 17th February, and from Saturday 3rd to Tuesday 6th September (instead of the previously-planned dates of 28th-31st August). In 2017, the summer session will be held from 2nd to 5th September, and in 2018 from 7th to 10th September.
