Nordstrom "Just says no" to Moschino drug-inspired capsule collection

The Moschino drug-themed capsule collection from spring 2017 has been pulled from Nordstrom, according to the American press. The retailer removed the ready-to-buy capsule from its stores and website after customers found the collection to be offensive and felt that it glorifies drug abuse.

A Change.org petition called for a boycott of Saks Fifth Avenue and Moschino for “blatently” promoting drug use, but it made no mention of Nordstrom. Only one commenter said that they will boycott Nordstrom in addition to Saks for carrying the collection.

The petition reads, “These accessory items you are choosing to market and sell to the public for profit, which include the Chain-Strap Prescription Bottle Bag and Printed Backpack, will most likely promote more drug use. Do you have any idea of the message your company is sending to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one due to a drug overdose?” The petition also makes mention of the late musician Prince who passed away in April due to a drug overdose.

Randy Anderson of Minneapolis, who launched the petition, also includes statistics related to drug abuse fatalities. He said, "According to the CDC, in 2014 47,055 people died of an accidental drug overdose - with 29,467 of those from opioid related drugs which includes prescription pain medication and heroin. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in this country."

A Nordstrom spokeswoman told Fortune, “We appreciate all the constructive feedback we received from concerned customers and ultimately decided to remove the collection from our site and the three stores where we offered it.”

The drug-themed capsule first debuted at Milan Fashion Week in September and includes a minidress and shoulder bag with mock prescription labels, a black minidress with a colorful pill pattern and a mock prescription package iPhone case among other pieces. A t-shirt and minidress from the collection also feature the phrase “Just Say MoschiNO,” which is a play on the Just Say No anti-drug campaign from the 1980s.

According to CNN, a spokesperson for Moschino said, "There was never any intent to promote prescription drug abuse. We are disheartened to hear that there has been a misunderstanding of the underlying theme of the collection."

Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott also came under fire in 2015 for one of his collections for the Italian fashion house. Graffiti artist RIME filed a copyright infringement suit against Moschino and Scott for allegedly using his art on a number of pieces from the Moschino fall 2015 collection.
