Miu Miu: Round Midnight with Uma, Chloë and Gwendoline
Racy retro glamour with a twist and a blast of movie star wattage at Miu Miu whose 2019 cruise collection kicked off the Paris haute couture season, notwithstanding the fact it did not contain any couture.
Staged in the resplendent Hôtel Régina, opposite the Louvre, Kate Bosworth and Chloë Sevigny vamped down the marble hallways; Game of Thrones warrior woman Gwendoline Christie towered over the rest of the cast, and Uma Thurman took the final bow in a seriously long leopard print gold lamé skirt and green top. Before a prolonged one-minute milking of the photographer pit, as Uma took off her new athletic floor-length coat, winking vigorously.
Alexa Chung walked, as did Naomi Campbell, in saucy, golden bedecked hot pants. The whole cast wearing gelled down hair; their wrists, necks and arms bearing multiple, bejeweled faux Casio watches. Every one of them femme fatales on a mission.
“It’s going out for the evening, until you get to the boudoir. The bad things that go on at night,” winked Miuccia Prada.
One sensed the cast of characters didn’t know exactly which boudoir they might end up in; seeing as four of them – including Bosworth and Campbell – wore sexy evening gowns and lingerie dresses under masculine cardigans, as if they had borrowed the knitwear from their lovers to return to their own bedrooms in the morning.
Half the looks, from the faded gray denim tunics and skirts to the futurist golden bubble skirts that recalled early Paco Rabanne – were trimmed with marabou feathers. Like many designers today, Miuccia injects athletic imagery into her collections, though without a hint of street. Hers is a rarefied, gilded world of high sophistication mingled with a dash of pertinacious sexuality.
“The thing is you have greater freedom with these sort of cruise collections,” added Miuccia.
Even her guest list suggested that. Post show, she dined with Roman Polanski, the 84-year-old fugitive master filmmaker, known for his pyscho-sexual films, who is still wanted for sentencing for statuary rape charges in California.
“Polanski is my hero,” said the noted feminist Prada.
Miuccia also opened up another Miu Miu club inside the Régina, a latest edition of her itinerant and fabulous nightclub – which this season meant a supper of fine Italian fare, vitello tonnato and risotto, and handsome, runway-worthy barmen. Many looks carried the insignia, Miu Miu Club Sat June 30 2018. The smoke room was a courtyard done up with a brilliant fresco of a golden Joan of Arc on horseback – just like the legendary statue of the saint that stands outside on the rue de Rivoli. The uneducated peasant gal who rose to become France’s greatest heroine, an image much fêted by the extreme right in France, but also a never-ending example to all women of bravery and courage.
No wonder all the movie stars looked so at ease in front of the Miu Miu club fresco.
“I only decided to include the actresses 48 hours ago, and the crazy thing is they all agreed immediately. Uma even flew in from LA!” marveled Miuccia, as a barman served a tray of whiskey sours.
