L'Oréal debuts face-scanning tech that makes personalized skincare formulas

L'Oréal's Technology Incubator is debuting new innovations in personalized beauty including a medically focused face-scanning platform for personalized serums, a custom foundation system and a 3D hair color app.

As beauty consumers are demanding more personalized products and services, Custom Dose is the first platform that can mix active ingredients outside of a traditional factory setting and instead in the doctor's office. The L'Oréal claims that the product can address issues like fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration.

Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L'Oréal's Technology Incubator said, "Dose acts like a mini skincare laboratory, combining lab grade formulation and factory grade manufacturing into a machine that sits on the counter."

To take advantage of Custom Dose, a patient consults with a SkinCeuticals skincare professional. The professional completes a survey on a tablet and data is transferred to the Dose machine. The machine then mixes active ingredients and dispenses a custom serum for the patient. A custom label is also printed to streamline reordering.

It took L'Oréal scientists a year to develop the processes for Custom Dose. 250 unique skin types were studied and 2,000 algorithms were created to deliver personalized product.

In addition to Custom Dose, L'Oréal is also debuting a new foundation system through its Lancôme brand. A beauty advisor will scan the customer's skin tone using a colorimeter and personalized foundation will be mixed and dispensed based on level of coverage and moisture desired, ranging from sheer to full.

Over 8,000 different shades are available with 72,000 customization options. Again, customers will have a personalized label printed so they can easily reorder their unique foundation.

L'Oréal is also debuting its professional use 3D hair color app. L'Oréal Professionnel's Style My Hair is an augmented reality app developed in partnership with Modiface. It is designed to provide salon professionals with a real time tool to help customers try on a new hair color in the salon.

All three technologies will be shown this weekend in Austin, Texas at Fast Company's Grill. The Custom Dose platform will be available at select physicians' offices across the US.
