Ikea is planning a giant £60 million store in Northern England that will be its second-biggest in the UK. The ambitious plans have now received the go-ahead from the local authority and it means building on the site will start before Christmas.

The eventual opening, in Chorley, Lancashire, will see the Swedish interiors giant debuting in a heavily-populated part of the country near Preston and only 45 minutes from the major city of Manchester.

The store will cover 35,000 sq ft and will be on two levels in a new giant retail park (that will itself cost £36 million). The park will see a wide range of retailers and leisure options such as restaurants, plus it will have a ready-made group of shoppers as new houses are being built too.

The new Ikea will have plenty of features to lure those family-focused shoppers with a creche, restaurant, bistro and playground, as well as its full product offer.

The new branch is expected to open in 2020 and comes as Ikea ramps up its investment in the UK with a spate of new stores planned across the country.

The largest UK Ikea store is in Wembley, just on the edge of London, where the company operates a 40,0000 sq ft unit.
