House of Fraser to anchor Chester development, add extra-large beauty hall

British department stores chain House of Fraser has signed an agreement to open an anchor store at the new Chester Northgate retail and leisure complex in Cheshire.

This will be the second largest UK store opening, following Rushden Lakes which opens later this year, since the company’s acquisition by Sanpower Group in late 2014.

Chester Northgate is the 500,000 sq ft redevelopment of Chester city centre, aimed at revitalising the north-west quadrant and putting the city back into the UK’s top 50 retail centres. With a 100,000 sq ft unit spreading over three floors, House of Fraser will be an essential part of the scheme, which will also include 70 stores, cafes and restaurants as well as 70 homes, a hotel & conference centre and a six-screen cinema.

House of Fraser’s store will be designed to accommodate a multichannel experience-led retail offering through elements of the build such as a large health and beauty department, which is twice the size of traditional beauty departments, and a premium rooftop restaurant with views over Chester's historic racecourse.

“Securing House of Fraser for Chester Northgate is a major milestone for the scheme as we move towards starting development on the site in late 2018," said David Lewis, Chief Executive at Rivington Land.

The Chester regeneration is being spearheaded by Cheshire West and Chester Council and assisted by development manager, Rivington Land.

Construction will starting in late 2018, targeting an opening of all three phases by 2021.
