Fern Mallis debuts new book at Saks Fifth Avenue

This week, the Fifth Avenue location of the iconic department store is featuring mannequins in designs from each of Mallis' interview subjects in 16 of its storefront windows, coinciding with the launch of the founder of New York Fashion Week's new book, Fashion Lives: Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis.

The new author released the book at a star-studded book launch at the store on Monday night, attended by some of the biggest names in the industry, many of whom made it into her book – a compendium of most of her interviews thus far.

The collection of interviews serve as the basis for the looks on the mannequins, which include looks by designers Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Donna Karen and Vera Wang.

The elaborate display was built in preparation for the launch event, hosted by Marc Metrick, Saks’ new president. Guests included von Furstenberg, Klein, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa, and famed fashion photographer Bill Cunningham.

Mallis is credited with creating New York Fashion Week in 1993, known then as 7th on Sixth productions. In July 2001, she became the Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion after the company acquired 7th on Sixth. Her role as Senior VP followed her 10-year stint as Executive Director of the CFDA. Today, she is the President of her own international fashion design consultancy and hosts her 92nd Street Y series and her Sirius XM radio series, Fashion Insiders w/ Fern Mallis.
