Dior creates costumes for Daniil Simkin's new project at the Guggenheim

Maria Grazia Chiuri created the costumes for the new project created by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Daniil Simkin. Simkin’s “Falls the Shadow” will premiere at the Guggeinheim on Monday.

The 30-minute dance performance is the brainchild of the Russian ballet star and is choreographed by Alejandro Cerrudo. Simkin approached Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri about creating costumes for the project in November, leading to Chiuri sitting in on rehearsals of the performance before conceiving the costumes.

Chiuri’s creation for the dancers include grey bodysuits with patterns mimicking veins. The suits are trimmed with Chiuri’s new logo for the French fashion house, “J’adior Christian Dior,” which she has included on apparel and accessories since assuming creative control of the label.

The fashion world has taken an increasing interest in ballet in recent months. American Ballet Theatre principal Misty Copeland was recently signed as the latest face of Estée Lauder’s Modern Muse fragrance, while Cole Haan tapped New York City Ballet dancers for his recent campaign. ABT star David Hallberg is one of the new faces of Tiffany & Co., alongside the likes of Zoë Kravitz and Elle Fanning. In September, the New York City Ballet will host its annual Fall Fashion Gala, with original costumes designed by the likes of Virgil Abloh and Jonathan Saunders.

Simkin’s “Falls the Shadow” will run at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum on September 4 and 5.
