Canali pushes international development via Paris and New York

A symbol of Italian masculine elegance, Canali has managed to slip through the cracks of time and crises. This historical clothing brand founded in 1934 in Brianza, north of Milan, made its specialty into its major asset — a single label for men, entirely made in Italy. At the same time, it radically focused its strategy on foreign markets where it now earns 86% of its revenue, a total of 184 million euros in 2011.

The brand just opened its second store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Following the store in the Pavilion Mall, it recently opened a 350 square-meter store in the Suria Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) in the heart of the "Golden Triangle," the business and shopping district of the Malaysian capital, close to the Petronas Twin Towers.

Also planned for the near future is a store in Algiers and a store in New York. The United States is the brand's largest foreign market, representing 24% of its total sales and home to its most prestigious customers such as George Clooney and Barack Obama. After the opening of a 160 square-meter store in Bal Harbour (Miami) in July, Canali plans to open a second store in New York next spring, a 500 square-meter space on Madison Avenue.

Another crucial step in its expansion abroad is France, where the brand has operated for 20 years through some fifty top multi-brand clients. In 2009, Canali opened its own store in Paris at 38 rue Marbeuf. This address was closed in late January and replaced by a pop-up boutique on Rue George V, pending the store's reopening in spring at 18, rue Marbeuf. The new space boasts 420 square meters on two levels, complete with a private salon for VIP customers.

The Paris store's design draws upon the more sophisticated concept developed for the London store in New Bond Street. France is an important market and can hold great potential for Canali, said a member of the fashion house's team. Besides the investment in this new Parisian address, the brand has recently created a new showroom at 22, place de la Madeleine.

Canali employs 1,600 people and has seven production centers in Italy and is also continuing its expansion into new markets. It has nearly 230 of its own stores throughout the world. In 2012, it opened a store Abu Dhabi in addition to its four addresses in Dubai. It has opened three stores in Egypt and a second store in South Korea and four stores in China for a total of 71. And it has opened two new locations in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), where it now has eight stores.

Just one year ago, Canali also established a joint venture as majority stakeholder with its Indian partner, distributor Genesis Luxury Fashion Private Limited, an effort to develop this market where it already has five stores.
