Baselworld 2016: Casio's connected watch keeps time in over 300 world cities
Mar 25, 2016
At the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair (March 17-24), Casio presented a new solar-charging connected women's watch that shows the time in two different time zones. As the first Casio women's watch of its kind, the "SHB-100" connects to a smartphone via a dedicated application for a quick and easy way to keep accurate time in over 300 cities worldwide.
While connected watches aren't about to replace traditional timepieces at the world watch and jewelry fair in Basel, Switzerland, they are certainly making an appearance at the industry's most important show.
Casio is presenting several connected men's watches at the Swiss event, as well as one model for women. The SHB-100 is part of Casio's "Time Ring" series, adding to the Japanese brand's "Sheen" collection. The innovative thing about this watch is that it gives the time in two different cities at once, thanks to a second hours-and-minutes subdial at eight o'clock. This shows wearers the time in two different time zones at a glance. The watch also connects to a smartphone to ensure accurate time whether in Paris, New York, Sydney or Tokyo.
The SHB-100 connects to a free smartphone app called "Casio Watch+" -- already available to download from the App Store and Google Play. This effectively links the watch to internet time servers around the world, ensuring accurate home and world times displayed simultaneously.
The app corrects home and world times on the watch four times per day, while automatically adjusting for time changes such as daylight saving time. Plus, one-touch time adjustment means that wearers can adjust to local time at the simple press of a button when traveling abroad.
Design-wise, Casio has opted for a case with a wide opening, matched with embossed index marks for optimized readability. The case is finished in a new peach gold ion plating for a stylish effect, and the dial is adorned with two Swarovski crystals at 12 o' clock.
