Zalando said around 7,200 orders had been placed per minute at peak times on Black Friday, compared with 4,200 a year ago, with gross merchandise value - sales made on its website by itself or its partners - up 32%.

The most popular items were black leggings, T-shirts with a logo and black sneakers, Zalando said.

David Schneider, Zalando Co-CEO, said: “Following the success of last year’s Black Friday, we leveraged our entire platform ecosystem to provide ... attractive offers throughout the entire Cyber Week. We are proud to announce that we surpassed our ambitious targets by far, especially with regards to the Partner Program. The success of this year’s Cyber Week marks another milestone for our growth."
