Lee, a Royal College of Art graduate who has previously worked with Yves Saint Laurent and Nike as a footwear consultat, has won several prizes including a Manolo Blahnik shoe design competition and the ITS8 Italy Accessories Collection of the Year.

The collection on display in YKK’s showroom features three shoes made using unconventional techniques. The first piece is a 3D printed shoe made solely from resin. It features no joins, and took fourteen hours to digitally print.

Also on display is a flat pack shoe made from six individual acrylic pieces, where different parts can be swapped for a different colour or material to create a new style.

Finally, Lee’s steel heel shoes merge modern and traditional influences with a heel and base constructed from leather and plastic.

“The design approach I took in creating the pieces for the YKK London Showroom is an unconventional shoemaking technique that needed the expertise from other disciplines. To achieve this, I needed to employ outside help to create my shoe collection. I received welcomed support from a local Hatton Garden jeweller, who created my steel heels with laser welding using heat conduction. I also worked with local spray painters from Essex who created the marble effect on the 3D printed shoe. Both were really supportive and helped me in creating the intricate and delicate design of the collection,” she commented.

The collaboration with YKK strengthens the zipper manufacturers’ London showroom offering with the aim of transforming it into a unique space for designers, students and customers. The Japanese company opened the London showroom in 2015.
