Woolmark links with Vilebrequin for woollen swimwear

Published
Apr 14, 2022

Wool hasn’t been the kind of material we’ve associated with swimwear since the early days of the 20th century. But Woolmark and Vilebrequin hope that might change having collaborated on the latter’s first range of Merino wool swimwear.

Vilebrequin x Woolmark

They’ve come up with a trio of men’s boardshorts with the three pieces certified by The Woolmark Company.

The wool itself is non-mulesed from Reda’s Active collection that’s described as “soft next to skin but resistant enough to handle the ocean”.

The worsted Merino wool fibres form a naturally water-friendly, quick-drying shell, especially when woven at higher densities. All fabrics can also achieve a drying time of five to seven minutes.

They said they’ve taken “swimwear to a sartorial level” and have drawn on “traditional suiting methods for everything from weaving to pattern cutting and pocket placement. Each pair of trunks demands an average of 32 steps. For a truly bespoke fit and engineering that lasts”.

It continues a traditional at the label of using “textiles you wouldn’t typically associate with swimsuits”, such as African Wax fabric, sailcloth, and linen.

Vilebrequin CEO Roland Herlory said: “Merino wool is real source of eco-innovation, and perfectly in line with [our] target to create 80% of collections using exclusively sustainable fabrics and processes by 2023. We feel confident our clients will appreciate its remarkable quality and the naturally chic way it hangs on the body. Partnering with The Woolmark Company has introduced us to cutting-edge techniques that reduce our impact on the planet while delivering a uniquely elegant product.”
