Published

The £260 million shopping centre was opened on Thursday after 12 years in the making, welcoming thousands of eager shoppers to see the largest retail centre to open in the UK this year.

The 550,000 sq ft shopping centre will create over 2,500 jobs - Westfield Bradford

Owned by Meyer Bergman and operated by Westfield, the centre houses more than 70 retailers and eating outlets, with some of its largest tenants including Debenhams, M&S, Topshop and Boots.

Works on the 550,000 sq ft shopping centre began in 2004, but halted in 2008 due to the financial crisis. In 2013, Westfield announced work would restart in January 2014, ten years after the development started.

According to its developers, the centre will create 2,500 jobs and boost footfall in Bradford by 40%. It aims to create a vibrant retail destination at the heart of Bradford, the fifth fastest growing city in the UK outside of London.

The long-awaited shopping centre was officially opened by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.
