Hammerson’s £165m regeneration project, Victoria Gate in Leeds, has officially opened its doors to the public, creating over 1,000 retail and leisure jobs.

Launched on Thursday morning, the scheme adjacent to Hammerson’s Victoria Quarter arcade forms part of a new shopping destination for Leeds. Victoria Gate is anchored by a John Lewis flagship store, which is the first in Leeds and the largest outside of London, and a strong line-up of aspirational and global brands, including Russell & Bromley, GANT, Hackett, Tommy Hilfiger, CAU, Joules, Aspinal of London and Anthropologie.

With 53,400 square metres of space, the shopping centre becomes the largest premium retail and leisure venue in Northern England, making Leeds the third best place to shop in the UK, according to Javelin.

The 21st century retail arcade was designed by architects Acme. The façade draws elements from the surrounding architecture of Leeds' historic buildings and uses a mixture of white terracotta and red bricks which were manufactured in Yorkshire and Staffordshire.

Victoria Gate will also deliver customers with an exceptional customer service by offering click & collect services, gift wrapping, currency exchange and a luxury concierge service.

David Atkins, CEO at Hammerson said: "This is a truly unique development and there is nothing else like it in the UK.  We are confident that Victoria Gate will set new standards for retail across Europe as it becomes an iconic piece of Leeds' retail heritage.”

Atkins said Leeds is not set to become “the undisputed regional shopping capital of the North."

Construction of the development began in April 2014, creating over 520 new construction jobs.
