US court clears Philipp Plein of homophobia allegation

Philipp Plein has been cleared by the New York Supreme Court after being accused of homophobic discrimination. The New York State’s court of first instance fully absolved the German designer and founder of the eponymous luxury label in the case that pitted him for over a year against Amro Alsoleibi, the former regional director of Philipp Plein’s New York stores.

The New York court has ruled in favour of Philipp Plein - Philipp Plein

Alsoleibi accused Philipp Plein of discriminating against him in the workplace because of his homosexuality, which, he argued, resulted in his unjustified dismissal. In a press release following the court's verdict in Plein’s favour, the label stated that “the former employee used false allegations of homophobia to deflect attention from his wrongdoings at Philipp Plein Americas Inc., which led to his dismissal in 2019.”

Alsoleibi, hired by Philipp Plein in 2018, perpetrated fraud by diverting funds from the company for a total of $100,000. The sums were invoiced for fictitious services by Philipp Plein Americas Inc. to a phantom company owned by Alsoleibi’s friend and co-tenant Tala Atassi. The court established that, as soon as he uncovered the scam, Plein fired Alsoleibi, as indicated by the label in the press release.

Alsoleibi’s accomplice Atassi had in the meantime sued Philipp Plein, demanding $100,000 in payment for the recruitment services allegedly rendered. But Philipp Plein has stated that the court ruled in its favour in this case too. “On April 6 2022, the New York Supreme Court found the allegations [against Philipp Plein] unwarranted. It also ruled that not only did Alsoleibi have no authority to hire his friend or anyone else on behalf of Philipp Plein Americas Inc., but that he had concealed such contracts from his employer.”

“I am very pleased about this decision, which sets the record straight and responds to the despairing attempt by Mr. Alsoleibi to discredit my reputation in order to try make money off me,” said Plein in the press release. “My brand and my business have been built from zero through over 20 years of hard work by hundreds of people, among whom both LGBTQ and heterosexual [individuals] have always been represented,” he added.

“I will always react against attacks like the one by Mr. Alsoleibi, who first tried to deceive me and my company by creating false services and contracts, and then tried to deceive public opinion and the press by creating false allegations. My utmost appreciation goes to the judge who was able to acknowledge that,” concluded Plein.
