Uniqlo to open at Intu Watford as slow and steady expansion beyond London continues

Uniqlo is the latest name to sign up to the £180 million extension of Intu’s mall in Watford in a further sign of how the biggest mall developments are nabbing the best tenants in the troubled UK retail market at present.

Uniqlo is known for its slow and steady approach to expansion and although Watford means it has actually announced three major openings in recent months, the other two were in London.

Only last week it said it would anchor Angel Central with a 15,000 sq ft store following the mall’s £11 million refurbishment. And three months ago it opened a new store in London’s destination Spitalfields area.

The Intu Watford move follows the property giant’s addition of 4000,000 sq ft to the mall that helped to propel Watford into the top 20 retail locations ranking from property consultancy CACI.

The two-level Uniqlo store will only be Uniqlo’s fourth space outside of the all-important London area.

Other big names to have taken space at the mall include Hugo Boss, Zara, H&M and Hollister.

Rebecca Ryman, regional managing director at Intu, said: “Our investment in Watford has been focused on building the best mix of brands for Watford’s wide and affluent catchment population.”
