UK e-shoppers spend almost £300 shopping online at Christmas with almost a third of them beginning during or even before October.

Christmas shopping online starts early and sees an average spend of almost £300 - Archiv

That's according to the latest research from the Royal Mail, which said that 30% of people are early Christmas shoppers. That said, most online festive shopping happens between November 15 December 13.

And it's interesting that men seem to spend most with an average outlay of £304 compared to £271 each for women. That adds up to an average spend of £292 per person.

All of which is good news for the fashion sector because clothing is the top purchase, running at 54%, ahead of other popular categories such as books, CDs/DVDs/videogames, and toys. The toiletries and make-up category is also a popular pick with 32% of shoppers buying online.

Consumers said that the reason they opt for online shopping so much around Christmas time is the ability to shop at any time of day (63%), the ability to compare prices (48%) and in number one position, the simple fact of being able to be comfortable at home while shopping (69%). Given that so many consumers are shopping at home, it’s no surprise that 59% of people use a laptop to Christmas shop with a smaller 34% using a smartphone.

And consumers seem to be raising their e-spend at quite a fast rate with last year’s Christmas shopping season seeing around 20% of people spending more online than they had in 2016.

The average gift costs £42 and the average number of gifts purchased online at Christmas per person is seven.
