UK shop vacancy rates hit lowest level in five years

Yet another sign that the UK economy is on the up has come from The Local Data Company, whose statistics reveal that shop vacancy in the UK was down to 12.9% in September.

This is the lowest it's been since April 2010. However, the vacancy rate for leisure (food, beverage and entertainment outlets including betting shops) has risen from 8.13% in August to 8.16% in September, which is the highest it's been since tracking of leisure began in 2013.

Vacancy rates in town centres fell by -0.1% in September. In shopping centres the vacancy rate dropped by -0.2% to 14.6% and there was a -0.1% drop in retail park vacancy rates.

Matthew Hopkinson comments: "Clearly this is very good news that vacancy rates are at their lowest level for over five years. There are a number of reasons for this and these will vary by specific location but ultimately consumers have more money in their pockets as a result of wages being higher than inflation, employment levels are improving and there is greater focus on the living wage as well as zero hours contracts."
