John Lewis, the British department store giant, saw sales increase by 4.2% year-on-year to £74.14m in the week to August 1. The retailer described it as "solid growth" and said sales were helped by a particularly damp Sunday in most areas.

Fashion sales grew once again, up by 2.6%, with menswear the strongest category, up 12.5%. Online sales also did well and were up by 13.3%.

"Peak holiday season is now upon us and our focus remains on introducing a few surprises for customers with some inspiring new products and propositions, in particular some fantastic new season's lines which are starting to appear on the website and in our shops," said Simon Russell, Director, Retail Operations Development, John Lewis.
