BA fashion design students from Manchester Metropolitan University, Northumbria University, Teesside University and University of Huddersfield can enter the competition to win a prize of £1,000 and the title of Hainsworth Young Designer of the Year.

Hainsworth, perhaps one of England’s most prestigious woollen mills, said the design brief will celebrate its rich heritage whilst nurturing Northern fashion talent.

The theme, titled ‘Respect the Past, Create the Future’, tasks students with creating a fashion garment that blends innovation with Hainsworth’s heritage.

The textile manufacturer said its cloth is probably the most iconic in British history. Its scarlet cloth was used by the British Army at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and the textile is still worn by the Royal Guards outside Buckingham Palace today.

The company also developed the first khaki worn by the British Army from 1899 and put the RAF in blue when they separated from the British Army in 1918.

The fabrics continue to make waves in fashion today, evolving into new styles and looks in collaboration with leading brands including Christopher Raeburn, Clarks and Alex Mullins.

Throughout early next year, Hainsworth will visit the competing universities to judge the garments and pick a finalist from each university. Each finalist will receive a cash prize of £250 and an invitation to present their garments in the Hainsworth mill. In addition to receive £1,000, the winner will be named as the Hainsworth Young Designer of the Year.
