Tesco UK CEO steps down due to illness

Tesco UK has announced that its CEO Charles Wilson will step down after being diagnosed with throat cancer earlier this year.

He will remain on the Tesco Executive Committee and focus on leading the Booker business, the wholesaler it acquired in March for £3.7 billion. In this capacity, Wilson will continue to contribute to the company’s broader UK strategy.

In a statement posted on Tuesday, Tesco said Wilson was diagnosed with cancer following an operation to remove his tonsils in April. He underwent daily radiotherapy in May and June and “has responded very well to the treatment”, the company continued.

However, given his illness, Tesco has decided to change its senior leadership team, with Jason Tarry, currently group chief product officer, named as new CEO of the UK & ROI business.

Andrew Yaxley, currently CEO Ireland, will replace Jason Tarry as group chief product officer and join the Tesco Executive Committee. Both Tarry and Yaxley will report to Tesco CEO Dave Lewis.

The changes will be effective from next Monday 16 July.
