Swim dress searches surge in warm weather
After the chilliest spring for quite a few years, the onset of warm weather and the easing of lockdown restrictions have led to interest in holidays surging. And plus-size specialist Yours Clothing said that swim dresses appear to be high on consumers’ shopping lists with searches for them having gone through the roof.
The company used Google search volumes and internal data to conclude that searches for swim dresses were up a massive 400% over the bank holiday weekend, and it sees such items as a key summer trend.
Holidays abroad are still in question for UK consumers because of the rapidly-changing situation around countries that can or can’t be visited with having to quarantine when they return home. But summer-like weather in Britain raises the prospect of more sun-soaked staycations and day trips to the beach.
It’s particularly interesting that the swim dress search explosion came despite searches for one-piece swimsuits being up only 18%, bikini searches rising an even smaller 3% and overall swimwear searches actually falling 15%.
The company said this suggests the swim dress seems “highly likely [to] be the 2021 summer fashion staple to wear sunbathing in the garden, to the beach and around the pool as the weather heats up”.
In some ways it’s an easy ‘compromise’ piece that offers a touch more coverage should the British weather offer up one of its trademark disappointments.
