Strathberry bets on physical stores revival with Edinburgh luxury district opening

It may seem like the worst possible time to open a new physical shop, but luxury bag brand Strathberry is betting on the revival of in-person shopping with its first store in key destination, Edinburgh.

The company is based in the city and is taking a space on Multrees Walk. It will be in good company there with retailers and brands such as Harvey Nichols, Burberry, Mulberry, Coach and Louis Vuitton also operating boutiques in the Scottish capital’s style district.

The new store should open before Christmas and comes ahead of the nearby debut of the St James Quarter early next year.

Strathberry shot to fame a few years ago when Meghan Markle carried one of its bags during her first official engagement ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry. That endorsement gave it global exposure and it now has stores in London’s upscale Burlington Arcade (a key tourist destination in normal times) and in Shanghai, in the all-important Chinese market.

The seven-year-old brand was founded by husband-and-wife team Guy and Leeanne Hundleby.

They said the new location’s decor was inspired by the Palais Bulles in the South of France. Owned by Pierre Cardin, Strathberry shot one of its campaigns there.
