Fashion designer Stella McCartney revealed the Union Jack-inspired kit she has designed for the British Olympic team on Thursday, as athletes paraded it on a catwalk at the Tower of London.

McCartney watched as more than 30 prospective members of Team GB modelled the red, white and blue Adidas kit in the British capital, which hosts the Olympic Games from July 27 to August 12.

The designer, the daughter of Beatles singer Paul McCartney, said the Union Jack was "one of the most beautiful flags in the world".

"It was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way," added the 40-year-old, who worked with the German sportswear maker on the kit for more than two years.

Several athletes said the clothing, which athletes will wear for medal ceremonies, training and relaxation as well as competitions, could help them get a psychological edge.

"All eyes will be watching London 2012 so every little detail matters," said one of Britain's potential medal contenders, triple jumper Phillips Idowu.

"I love what Stella has done with the design.

"Looking good is psychologically important, but my sprint suit is also technically advanced," he added.

Other athletes were less enthused. "Oh dear, the Olympic kit!!" tweeted triple Olympic track cycling champion Bradley Wiggins.

McCartney, a former creative director of the Paris fashion house Chloe, set up her own label in 2001.
