Somerset House opens new fashion & photography exhibition

Somerset House is looking at the contemporary artistic and stylistic representations of the north of England through fashion, art and photography in its new exhibition ‘North: Fashioning Identity’.

Fashion garments from designers including Paul Smith, Gareth Pugh and Off White’s Virgil Abloh are presented alongside photographs by Alasdair McLellan, Corinne Day, Nick Knight and David Sims and artworks from a host of artists to explore northern identity, representation and influences.

Curated by SHOWstudio editor-at-large Lou Stoppard and Adam Murray, lecturer at Manchester School of Art and Central Saint Martins, the exhibition aims to unearth collective visions of northern England, from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Birkenhead, Doncaster to Preston, and consider why these regions have become a source of inspiration for many artists.

The items on display are by both homegrown creatives and international artists, including Belgian designer Raf Simons and American fashion designer and creative director of Off White, Virgil Abloh.

‘North: Fashioning Identity’ opened on Wednesday 8 November and will run until 4 February 2018 at Somerset House.
