Shazam is creating a clothing recognition app

Shazam is a music finder app that offers users the possibility of buying the track there and then via their mobile device. CEO Andrew Fisher is looking to expand this concept to other domains, with fashion next on the list.

The company wants the word ‘shazam’ to be synonymous with automated searches through various types of media, which is where the new concept of allowing users to find clothing they have seen on the television has stemmed from.

"We have the ability to identify the product in a TV show so that when somebody Shazams it, they could find out where a presenter's dress is from in one click,” said the CEO. “The app is all about brand engagement,” continues Fisher, adding that the app will make it easier for consumers to engage with a brand or product that they are interested in without having to trawl through search engine results.

According to the boss, after scanning the item for 30 seconds, the internet user will be able to find the product online within three minutes. The app will function for TV shows and commercials. Last year, advertising agency Nielsen published that four out of five people watch TV whilst using their smartphones or tablets so Shazam could be latching on a very lucrative market.
