Scottish retail sales down 1.4% in June

The latest figures from the SRC-KPMG Scottish Retail Sales Monitor show that total retail sales in Scotland were down 1.4% year-on-year in June, above the three-month average of 1.8%.

Like-for-like sales were also down 1.4%, but total food sales were up 0.1%, the first reported sales growth since December 2015. Non-food sales fared worse though, down 2.6% compared to June 2015, when they had decreased 1.3%. When online sales have been taken into account, total non-food sales decreased by 0.5%.

Ewan MacDonald-Russell, Head of Policy & External Affairs, Scottish Retail Consortium said: "These June figures show Scotland is still some way from sustained retail sales growth. Overall, there is a small real-terms rise of 0.6% against June 2015, which is slightly less than the previous month. Food sales were stronger, growing by nearly one per cent. However, this was slightly offset by lower non-food sales, with clothing and footwear performing relatively poorly."

He added: "It's far too early to tell whether the vote on membership of the European Union will have an impact on retail sales and shop prices. "

Earlier this month, the British Retail Consortium said spending rose by just 0.2% in the UK last month compared with June of last year, slowing sharply from growth of 1.4% in May.
