Sunderland of Scotland, a technical golfwear brand with roots dating back to 1911, has been acquired by its European distributor, Glenmuir, for an undisclosed sum.

Under the terms of the deal, Glenmuir, which is also a Scottish golf clothing brand, will own the global rights and distribution for the Sunderland brand outside of Asia from 1 January 2020.

Glenmuir will continue to design, market and distribute Sunderland from its headquarters in Lanark, Scotland, and said the acquisition will result in no changes in employment.

This means that Sunderland will continue to exist as a separate brand with Spring Summer and Autumn Winter collections, as well as capsule collections such as the recent 1891 Heritage Collection and Saltire Collections.

The deal brings together two of Scotland’s oldest golf brands with a combined 230 years of heritage between them. Glenmuir said both brands have been “tremendous growth” in the last two years and are now distributed in over 30 countries globally.

Mikhel Ruia, managing director of Glenmuir and Sunderland of Scotland commented: “Both brands are a natural fit, with their respective Scottish heritage, shared brand values and focus on crafting premium quality durable products.

“They also allow us to innovate our product offering for different customers with the Glenmuir brand focussed on traditional and elegant golf wear whilst Sunderland of Scotland is our technical high performance weatherwear brand. We remain committed to serving the on-course golf professional shop which remains at the heart of our business. Our focus on product quality, embroidery and customer service have made the brands the most respected and reliable names in golf and we are excited to enter our next chapter on our journey of growth and development.

Warren Sunderland, the son of Toby Sunderland who started the brand in Glasgow in 1911 added: “We are delighted that the brand will retain its Scottish roots and heritage and is in safe hands with such a well-respected brand like Glenmuir.”
