Sarah Mower to get special recognition for young talent links at Fashion Awards

Published
Sep 12, 2023

Fashion journalist, critic, and advocate for young designers, Sarah Mower is to receive a Special Recognition Award for Championing Young Designer Talent at The British Fashion Council's (BFC) Fashion Awards on 4 December at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Sarah Mower

As well as being a critic at Vogue, the BFC’s Ambassador for Emerging Talent, and Chair of the BFC NewGen committee, she has provided “prolific support to young British designers, guided by a relentless dedication to ensuring that talent from every background has the chance to participate in the industry”, the BFC said.

It noted her support for emerging British designers “has led to the rise of Ashish, Bianca Saunders, Christopher Kane, Erdem, JW Anderson, Matty Bovan, Priya Ahluwalia, Richard Quinn, Simone Rocha, SS Daley and countless others”.

Additionally, Mower is also a campaigner "raising much needed scholarships for the students who will contribute to the health of the industry’s future in all its developing areas".

This year she has guest curated the landmark exhibition, Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion sponsored by Alexander McQueen at the Design Museum, which celebrates 30 years of BFC’s NewGen and tells the story of “100s of fearless young designers who started in the UK and have transformed the fashion landscape”.

Mower is also a Visiting Professor at Central Saint Martins and her work has earned her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Westminster University, plus she's an Honorary Fellow Royal College of Art, has an Honorary Doctorate from the Academy of Art University of California, and an MBE for services to the fashion industry since 2011.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive, BFC, said: “She has been a constant pillar of support to young talent, nurturing diverse perspectives and recognising the sparks in the future generation of creatives. Mower’s significant role in raising the profile of British designers within the global community has left an indelible mark on British fashion and we look forward to celebrating with her in December.’’
