Sandwich Fashion in bankruptcy filing, but webstore post says it will be back

After Scotch & Soda’s widely-reported problems, Sandwich is the latest Dutch brand to hit a roadblock, although in the latter case, it hasn’t yet resulted in a rescue purchase but a Netherlands court declaring it bankrupt and its webstore closing.

The bankruptcy apparently happened in February and the firm’s last Instagram post was during that month. Its webstore is for the moment carrying a message saying “we’ll be back soon” and promising a 10% discount in the future.

Amsterdam-based Sandwich was founded back in 1981 and has been owned by fashion and accessories retailer Veldhoven Group. It was stocked by a number of mid-market UK department stores, as well as independents.

Given the “back soon” website message, we have to assume that the owner wants to resurrect it at some point but it’s currently unclear when — or even whether — it will do this. We also don’t know whether existing wholesale orders will be completed.

Veldhoven International BV has been through a bankruptcy process before (back in 2019).

As mentioned, Scotch & Soda recently declared bankruptcy (back in March), but within a week the high-profile business had been acquired by Bluestar Alliance, the American brand management company, for an undisclosed sum. The new owner said it believed it could attract new shoppers to the label.
