Saint Laurent to stage show in Venice

As spring heralds a long-awaited recovery after 2020, Venice is a highly coveted destination. Especially by luxury labels. The Italian city is hosting the Biennale architecture exhibition, which has recently opened and will run until November 21, and several luxury houses have decided to take advantage of this and stage their own events in Venice. Like Saint Laurent, which will team up in Venice with US multimedia artist Doug Aitken, whose installation will provide the backdrop to the label’s Spring/Summer 2022 menswear show on July 14.

Creative director Anthony Vaccarello “has commissioned world-renowned artist Doug Aitken a site-specific, large-scale installation that Saint Laurent will offer to the city of Venice and to its followers,” said the label owned by Kering in a press release, adding that “the artwork will provide the setting to the catwalk show, [to be staged] in conjunction with the architecture Biennale, and will be publicly accessible until July 30 2021.” For the time being, Saint Laurent has not revealed the installation’s location.

A few days ago, Valentino announced its intention to show in Venice on July 15. The luxury label will present the Fall/Winter 2021-22 haute couture collection, called ‘Des Ateliers’, at a venue that is still secret. “Venice genuinely, spontaneously sparks positive vibrations in art, theatre, music, architecture, cinema and everything to do with creativity. This is why [Venice] was a natural choice,” said Valentino's Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Since the 17th Venice Biennale architecture exhibition was inaugurated on May 22, many other labels have been staging cultural events in the city. The Louis Vuitton Foundation's Venice site is home to an exhibition about designer Charlotte Perriand and architect Frank Gehry.

In parallel, the Prada Foundation’s Ca’ Corner della Regina palace is hosting a contemporary art exhibition entitled ‘Stop Painting’, while Hermès has asked Dutch designers Mieke Meijer and Roy Letterlé of Studio Mieke Meijer to create an artistic window display for its store in the city’s Saint Mark area, part of the luxury label’s ‘Fundamentals’ project.
