Quiksilver, the world's largest manufacturer of surf wear, is one of the first surf companies to join Minds + Machines' Pioneer program and secure a number of .surf domain names, such as quiksilver.surf, camp.surf, wetsuits.surf and more.

Quiksilver explained that it wants to give its fans and followers (more than 4 million on Facebook) easier access to its products but also a digital experience.

Nicolas Foulet, Global Head of Ecommerce and Digital Marketing, commented: "At Quiksilver, we appreciate how important digital is for the worldwide surfing community. By creating these brand new quiksilver.surf websites, we can point our fans to really cool, new content they can use and the short, generic names make it really easy to remember and get to very specific information quickly."

Quiksilver, which saw its revenue drop 11% to 1.57 billion dollars in its 2014 financial year, is also creating other .surf sites, such as event.surf, roxy.surf and quik.surf, which will redirect visitors to its social media sites.

By adopting the .surf domain name, Quiksilver is showing its desire to branch out into the digital world and social media. A move that was a long time coming, according to a specialist in the sector, as the surf brands weren't very successful in this arena just a few years ago, even though their biggest audience is precisely those who use social media the most, the youth.

And with ".surf" Quiksilver also pulls the rug out from under its competitors. Minds + Machines, which says that the new Quiksilver sites should be online in the next weeks, also said that that brands like Hurley and Billabong have also secured domain names on .surf.
