Prada has added to its product portfolio by launching a new fine jewellery line. The Italian luxury label has always featured a costume jewellery range, but has now gone upmarket with its first collection of fine gold pieces, which will be commercialised from May at select Prada stores and on the label’s e-shop.

“The costume jewellery collection is doing very well. But there was more and more demand for a fully fledged fine jewellery line,” stated Prada. The Italian label is following in the wake of other leading luxury names, increasingly seeking to diversify their range by introducing their own high-end jewellery collections. This year, both Gucci and Giorgio Armani launched a high jewellery line.

Prada’s new collection is managed internally, through a team focusing exclusively on this project. In a press release, Prada underlined the line’s high level of sophistication across the entire production process. The pieces “are made in 18-carat gold and diamonds sourced from suppliers certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2015 to promote responsible practices in metal and gemstone processing, from extraction to commercialisation.”

The collection consists of earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces. The design is clean, pared-down, and is distinctive for its ironic vibe. The pieces riff on some of the amusing motifs which popped up in Prada’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections in the last few years, such as bananas, guitars, roses, rabbits and robots. Without of course forgetting the label's triangular logo, which has pride of place on some of the pieces.

The price range is from €580 for a bracelet to €4000, with many necklaces priced around the €2000-euro mark.
