Peacocks is replacing its single-using shopping bags with a biodegradable alternative to help tackle the issue of plastic waste.

The high-street brand is planning to roll out the new shopping bags across more than 500 stores by the end of the month.

"We are delighted to be rolling out bio-degradable bags across all of our stores as part of a wider overall strategy of reducing our environmental footprint whilst continuing to offer our customers amazing quality and value," said Leighton Humphreys, finance director at Peacocks to Business Green.

The biodegradable bags are manufactured by global plastics supplier A. Schulman, and are designed to completely biodegrade in two months in a commercial composting facility.

Marks & Spencer also recently announced a switch to reusable shopping bags made from plastic that has been collected and recycled by Plastic Bank, a social enterprise supporting plastic recycling in Haiti and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the UK government has set out to ban the sale of plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds, which could come into force as soon as October 2019, and has launched an inquiry into the environmental impact of the fast-fashion industry.
