Paris Men’s: Takahiromiyashita Thesoloist mixes Mickey Mouse with uniform

Takahiro Miyashita’s brand Takahiromiyashita Thesoloist returned to Paris to showcase his second ever collection there. This season’s collection for Spring/ Summer 2020 deconstructed formal wear, uniforms, and pop culture icons and reimagined them with a youthful and unique sensibility.

The University of Paris’ School of Medicine was the venue for Takahiromiyashita Thesoloist’s runway show held as part of Paris Fashion Week. The large hall in the building where the runway presentation took place was filled with distinct shadows from the venue’s large glass windows caused by strong early-summer sun.

The show began with melancholic music followed by an all-white ensemble. The first few looks featured men’s 19th century underwear mixed with a jumpsuit reminiscent of a union suit that featured details such as a separate wing-shaped collar with tie around the neck. Looks were styled with western belts, glen-check gaiters, chain necklaces, and chunky lace-up shoes.

Then, colour made its entry into the collection with a glen-check kilt, while black tailored items and monochrome graffiti prints also featured. Slender boyish models cut a punkish figure on the runway wearing garments inspired by uniforms.

A common theme in all of the looks was a design formula that used cut-off parts of uniforms and formal wear. Sleeveless tuxedo shirt tops with open sides and deconstructed gilets showed a fresh take on formal wear and uniform elements could be seen with black fireman’s hats, marine officer’s jackets, and jackets reminiscent of armour.

Mickey Mouse also made an appearance in the collection, hidden here and there in black-on-black appliqués. Thin black nylon textiles featured a Mickey Mouse emblem on one side that would only be noticed on closer inspection and the character was also found embroidered on jackets. Mickey Mouse’s famous gloved hand also found its way into the collection’s graffiti print and on necklaces.

In addition to the chunky-soled shoes that debuted at the start of the show, sneakers produced in collaboration with Converse also featured.

Miyashita’s signature rock-and-roll spirit was present in the collection seen in his disassembling and rebuilding of traditional symbols of authority such as uniforms, formal wear, and iconic cartoon characters.
