PETA, the animal rights organization, has written an open letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury to ask that he not let Gucci show exotic skins in its catwalk show in London's Westminster Abbey church.

“Every exotic skin bag, shoe or jacket showcased by Gucci comes with a high price – and it’s paid by animals who were mutilated and left to die slowly and in pain”, says PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi. “Slaughtering animals for vanity is in no way compatible with the Church’s message of kindness and compassion.”

The organization recently released footage from two farms that supply skins to luxury fashion houses, showing alligators being horrifically abused while still alive.

Gucci will be the first-ever fashion brand to show in Westminster Abbey, which is the traditional place of coronation for British monarchs and where Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011. Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele said the opportunity to show here is "magical."

PETA also recently targeted French fashion house Hèrmes, staging a protest outside the label's New Bond Street store in London in April. It opposes Hèrmes' use of ostrich skin, as a recent PETA exposé reveals gruesome details within the ostrich-slaughter industry.
