No real fur to appear during London Fashion Week in September

The upcoming London Fashion Week will be fur-free, with all designers on the official catwalk and presentation schedule deciding to forego fur in the first of such effort by a major fashion week.

"Today, we are able to announce that following a survey conducted with all LFW designers on the official catwalk and presentation schedule, no animal fur will be used at LFW September 2018,"  announced the British Fashion Council on Friday.

The institution said the results "reflect a cultural change based on ideals and choices" by designers, international brands and consumers as the industry moves toward a more sustainable and responsible future.

It follows news that Burberry will no longer use real fur in its collections, and it will start phasing out existing fur products. The British luxury brand came under fire earlier this year after reports emerged about it burning unsold products to prevent them from being copied. In addition to going fur-free, the brand said it will end this practice.

The British Fashion Council applauded Burberry’s decision as it presented a series of achievements made as part of its Positive Fashion initiative. Designed to drive positive change in the fashion industry, the platform has seen the BFC host a number of diverse events, such as a sustainability seminar with the Prince of Wales and businesses such as Mother of Pearl and Teatum Jones, and the Models First Initiative.

Over the last year, the BFC has also introduced a digital registration system at LFW Men’s, helped expand the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa to fashion industry applicants, and selected Richard Quinn for the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.
