New restrictions dent UK retail footfall

Published
Oct 19, 2020

The new coronavirus restrictions that came into effect in recent days had an immediate impact on retail footfall across the UK. There was a decline of 3.1% in the seven days to October 17, compared to the week before. Meanwhile year-on-year, footfall was down 32.3% compared to a 30.9% drop in the previous week.

And once again, it was larger cities that were hit the hardest with footfall in regional cities down 5.7% week-on-week, compared to much lower drops in smaller towns.

Footfall in central London declined by 2.3%, less than half the rate of regional cities around the UK, however much of that is due to the fact that the capital had previously recorded far greater drops in footfall than elsewhere. Given the greater restrictions in the north of England, it’s not surprising that the decline in footfall in the North & Yorkshire region of 5% from the week before was the highest of any area of the UK

The figures came from Springboard, which said the declines were fairly evenly spread out across different retail destination types with high streets down 2.8%, retail parks down 3% and shopping centres falling 3.5%.

It means that on high streets and in shopping centres, footfall is now 40% and 34.6% lower than last year respectively, while in retail parks the decline from last year remains far more modest at 13.2%.
