New Look has just published provisional figures for its 2011/2012 financial year. What stands out is the likelihood that its retail network will be reduced by between 50 and 100 stores, in the face of the success of its online sales. But online sales have done little to allay fears on sluggish consumer spending.

All the warning lights are on. The group’s sales have dropped by 2% to 1.5 billion pounds. On a like-for-like basis, there was a 5.9% decline; 5.7% on the British market alone. Its profit before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) dropped from 191 million to 171 million. The group, the second biggest womenswear and accessories retailer in the UK, has also extended its credit line until April 2015.
