New Balance signs a new sprinting talent

James Davis, New Balance's President, proclaimed it back in 2012: he wants to lap Puma in the sports outfitter stakes.

The challenge is still on, and New Balance is acquiring the tools to fulfil its ambitions. The US company recently made its intentions clear in the world of football by recruiting some of the sport's most renowned players.

Now it takes Puma head-on, by announcing the signing of Trayvon Brommell. Though his name doesn't yet rival that of Usain Bolt or US sprinter Justin Gatlin, Brommell arguably represents the future of sprinting.

He took bronze in the men's 100m sprint at the latest Athletics World Championships, held in the summer in Beijing.

Just 20 years old, Brommell clocked a time of 9.92, while his personal best is set at 9.84. He is also the world junior record holder.

For New Balance, already present in distance running, this signing means a clear enunciation of its ambitions in athletics.
