My Very Own bespoke eyeglasses by Mykita

Published
Sep 30, 2015

My Very Own (MVO) is the name of the customisation project launched by German eyewear manufacturer Mykita. Thanks to three digital techniques - 3D scanning, parametric design and additive manufacturing* - MVO can create eyeglasses whose design and setting are adapted to each face's topography, making one billion permutations possible.

How does it work? The customer who chooses optical or sunglasses frames from the MVO collection is immediately directed to a virtual fitting. His or her face is scanned and visualised, then the eyeglasses are digitally simulated and adjusted to the face's outline. The frames' colour, the glasses and the hinges are then selected, creating a bespoke item, which is produced using a type of 3D printing process called additive manufacturing. Eyewear brand Mykita developed the My Very Own project in partnership with Volumental, a personalisation specialist using 3D body scanning.

My Very Own will be showcased in Mykita and other optical stores in spring 2016.

*The method is based on selective laser sintering, a process which transforms ultra-fine polyamide powder into solid objects
