Muji on Thursday unveiled its special interactive installation, Muji Rest Stop, at its Cooper Square location in New York City. The Rest Stop is the first of its kind from the company and is made possible by a number of Muji products that are already available for purchase.

The Muji Rest Stop is a place where New Yorkers can escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The space consists of Muji’s world famous Body Fit Cushion and the Muji to Relax app. Customers can sit or lay on the cushion while listening to one of many relaxing nature sounds via the app.

Muji US President Asako Shimazaki said, "We want to show to the customer the perfect environment. We have the application for mobile to support our Body Fit Cushion. The sounds come from the natural environment and we believe these natural sounds make you relax."

It took some time for the Rest Stop to come to fruition. Shimazaki explained that regulations made selling the product in the US difficult. Once the company resolved the issue, it was able to sell the product in the US and eventually bring this ultimate relaxation experience to life.

"For now it’s only for this store, that’s why this store is very special," said Shimazaki. "It has a very good environment for furniture."

The Cooper Square location was the only store out of the over 400 Muji stores in Japan and over 300 Muji stores worldwide selected to host the Muji Rest Stop.

Shimazaki shared that the company does not have any plans to open more Rest Stops but it will open two stores this year in Palo Alto’s Stanford Shopping Center and a Manhattan flagship store on 5th Avenue.
