Monki to open new store in Sheffield

Published
Jul 24, 2019

H&M’s young fashion brand Monki has plans to open its first store in Yorkshire in November ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Together with Weekday, another H&M Group brand, Monki will open on the ground floor of Grosvenor House in Sheffield. It will occupy 5,221 sq ft to showcase its range of playful designs with a youthful irreverence.

“Sheffield is a city full of young, creative people and we can’t wait to open our first store there and share the full Monki experience,” said Jennie Dahlin Hansson, managing director of Monki.

Combining Scandi-cool and Asian street style, Monki has a significantly smaller presence in the UK than other H&M Group such as H&M, Cos and & Other Stories. Its list of locations features eight shops, half of which are in London.

Also opening in Grosvenor House in November is Weekday, H&M’s denim brand. This label has just two stores in the UK, but H&M has recently announced plans to open three new stores by the end of this year, including the Yorkshire site.

Monki and Weekday are the first brands to sign up for stores as part of Sheffield City Council’s Heart of the City II project, which will deliver a dynamic and vibrant mixed-use district in the heart of the city centre.

Commenting on the openings, councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are delighted to have secured the first of the scheme’s retailers in Monki and Weekday. They are both completely new brands to the city and will offer our shoppers more variety and choice.

“We are expecting further exciting announcements, which reflect our ongoing ambition for this to be the country’s most transformative and ambitious city centre development. With the council as the developer, it shows other cities that their centres can be vibrant places bustling with retail, residential and leisure opportunities.”

Jocelyn Holmes, senior leasing manager at Queensberry, added: “Monki and Weekday have really bought into the vision for the city centre and see it as the perfect location to expand their brands. Sheffield will be home to the first Monki in Yorkshire and the first Weekday outside of London, which is a real coup.”
