Moncler launches new footwear line to link to mountaineering heritage

Published
Sep 7, 2022

Moncler stepped into what it calls a “new footwear dimension” this week with the launch of the Trailgrip collection. It channels the brand’s “authentic mountain DNA to make light of challenging outdoor terrain” and is clearly positioned to make the most of the booming outdoor segment, rather than simply the ski category with which many consumers associate Moncler today.

The company said its diverse line-up is “defined by utility and united by a distinctive, rugged sole, inspired by maximum-traction mountain bike tyres”.

The exaggerated tread and curved rubber toecap “reinterpret fashion-forward edge, while ensuring ultimate durability and protection on the trail, or in the city”.

And that last point nods to the fact that many purchasers of clothing, shoes and accessories designed for some kind of activity never wear them for that and are instead making a style and comfort choice for their everyday lives.

The debut winterised Trailgrip GTX low-top sneaker is “supercharged for all-weather, active lifestyles by 100% waterproof, breathable Gore-tex technology”.

The shoes launch in four gender-neutral colourways — classic black, black with red, blue with teal and purple accents, and glacial white — each also coming with signature Moncler flashes.

Despite the colours being gender-neutral, the shoes still have a gender-specific edge and the men’s offering presents a version in “trail-ready beige”, as well as an olive green and grey that’s exclusive to UK-based retailer END.

“Pioneering” flexible carbon fibre plates also offer responsive cushioning and dynamic support” to help maximise energy output”. The carbon fibre chassis works as “a rock plate for underfoot protection and comfort, speed, and endurance”.

Moncler also said that “close partnerships” with storied outdoor specialists Cordura, the aforementioned Gore-tex and Vibram “further underline the Trailgrip’s unflinching outdoor credentials”.

For instance, targeting “ultimate grip and enhanced comfort”, it’s using Vibram’s Megagrip lugged rubber soles. Ortholite Sockliner is also incorporated underfoot for added comfort, partnered with a heel clip for stability.

A high-top Trailgrip GTX High follows later in the year, referencing Moncler’s mountaineering history, with a range of contemporary, hiking boot-influenced styles.
