Matchesfashion names John Mooney its creative director

Published
Feb 7, 2023

Luxury retailer Matchesfashion has continued to boost its top team, and has named a new executive creative director, finding him – like current Matches CEO Nick Beighton – among the ranks of ASOS execs.

Matchesfashion

John Mooney, the fashion e-tail giant’s former global brand creative director has already taken up the role and is responsible for all creative output across the omnichannel retailer’s operations.

The Royal College of Art graduate has a wide range of experience in more than 20 years working in fashion, that experience being both in luxury and in the mass market.

He began at Alexander McQueen in menswear then moved to Arcadia’s Topman retail brand. He joined ASOS 13 years ago, again, initially covering menswear. With a strong track record in that category at the firm, his responsibilities widened as he took up the global creative role in 2017.

Highly regarded, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Art & Design by Kingston University two years later.

As mentioned, he’s joined the team headed by ex-ASOS CEO Beighton who took the helm last year and has just secured a £60 million funding injection for the business from owner Apax Partners.

Mooney said his aim is now to explore, develop and renew the brand’s creative strategy and create “a recognisable and differentiated identity” for the Matchesfashion brand.

Beighton has been building his leadership team since his arrival and those he worked with at ASOS have been in the spotlight. The new COO Stuart Hill was a former ASOS management team member, although he’d later moved to Farfetch

But Beighton hasn’t only been looking at ex-ASOS colleagues and new commercial chief Carl Tallents came from Frasers to replace the departing Elizabeth Von der Goltz.
