Matalan commercial chief exits - report

Matalan has reportedly made its chief commercial officer redundant with James Brown stepping down from his board-level role with immediate effect.

That’s according to Businesslive, which said the senior post has been cut after a review by interim CEO Nigel Oddy. Former New Look and House of Fraser CEO Oddy took the top job at Matalan (on an interim basis) only a month ago.

Brown had been in his role since summer 2020, but he also worked for the company between 2001 and 2006. He’s worked for M&S, Littlewoods, Sainsbury's and Argos as well.

Liverpool-based Matalan is going through a period of major change. Facing key debt deadlines, it’s up for sale with firm bids having been due a month ago, although no news has emerged about who’s most likely to take it over.

The retailer’s founder, John Hargreaves, returned as chairman in the summer but soon stepped down in order to participate in the process and try to win back full control of the firm for his family.
