It announced the closure of its St Helens branch on Church Street last year, but Marks & Spencer is not leaving the town. This week, the retailer revealed plans to open a full-line, 40,000-square-foot anchor store at Ravenhead Retail Park in March.

The new location will allow the chain to open a larger, new-format store stocking all of its ranges across clothing and homewares, as well as a foodhall and a 64-seat M&S Café. Customers can also enjoy a variety of services including click & collect.

Staff at the Hardshaw Centre branch will transfer over to the new store when it opens on 14 March, and a number of new positions will also be created.

Lucy Grimes, M&S store manager at St Helen’s said: "As well as larger Food, Clothing & Home departments, we’re really looking forward to offering new services which we didn’t have previously, such as St Helens first M&S Café.”

Marks & Spencer has been part of St Helens’ retail scene for 90 years. Last year, it revealed it was leaving the St Helens high street, but the town avoided being included in a list of locations earmarked for closure.

Marks & Spencer is closing 100 stores across the UK to make the business more profitable. Branches in Crewe, Dover, Durham and Portsmouth have already closed, while stores in Clacton and Holloway Road will close in early 2019.

Ravenhead Retail Park is a 390,000-square-foot retail destination housing fashion, electrical and food & beverage chains including Arcadia, Next, Argos, Boots and Costa.
